Makalali Accommodation

Located close to the majestic Drakensberg mountain range, and west of the Kruger National Park, Makalali is to be found in the Gravelotte area. This is a private reserve of some 22 000 hectares.

Makalali consists of four separate camps (each with only 6 suites), all situated along the banks of the Makhutswi River. Although each camp is private, they are still within easy access of one another. Accommodation is all air-conditioned, and en suite, (suites also have a Victorian-style bath and an outdoor shower), equipped with a fireplace, and raised Sala (private outdoor deck/lounge, and excellent for private dining). The king-size beds in all units have mosquito nets.

Each camp is also equipped with its own plunge pool, private viewing deck, dining area and Boma. The camps are named Tandane (camp 1) - "place of love"; Phiva (camp 4) - "waterbuck"; Mkhiwa (camp 2) - "sycamore fig"; Emtomeni (Camp 3) - "jackalberry tree".

Families with children are welcome at Makalali. Special walks and game drives are arranged for children to experience the magic of nature. Children are welcomed with a special Makalali colour-in book and games upon arrival in Camp. Special meals can also be arranged. Makalali also offers baby-sitting facilities (for an additional nominal fee), which allows parents the luxury of enjoying worry-free game viewing, and dining.

Meals at Makalali are a culinary adventure, making use of pan-African dishes and styles. There is also an array of dining experiences. There is the well-known Boma dinner and outdoor experience of note. You might also wish to enjoy indoor-outdoor dining area where you can enjoy a plated dinner or the more casual family style dining with other guests. There is also the choice of a private "Sala" Dinner for the Romantics.

There are a number of activities both in, and around, the Reserve. These include game drives, educational walks, bird-watching, stargazing, and day trips to the Kruger National Park.

In addition, Makalali is well placed for some diverse adventures and activities, such as Panoramic Escarpment Tours - which include the Blyde River Canyon, and Pilgrim's Rest. You might want to try River Rafting on the Olifants - with rapids graded 2 - 4. There is also the chance to visit a nearby Shangaan Village, or the Cheetah Breeding Project.

For the golfers, there is the nearby Hans Merensky course.
